Inspect The Truck’s Brakes!
Most companies charge either a full day or a half day rate, PLUS they charge per mile as well. All differ in some way or another so it is important to do your research and comparisons, either on the internet or over the phone. Once you have reached a decision of which company to go for it is a wise idea to speak to them face to face in order to sort out details and exchange the relevant paperwork.
Moving Day Tips: How to pack your rental truck on moving day
Here are some of the things you need to know before booking a rental truck.
Ask the rental company for advice as they may have an idea what size of truck may need in relation to the size of your house. You don’t want to pay out for extra space you don’t need but at the same time you need to make sure you have enough to fit in all your stuff.
If you are moving a long distance, there is a distinct possibility that you will be able to rent from one branch near where you are starting from and then return the truck to another branch which is nearest to your new home.
This is called a one-way truck rental.
It is best to book these in advance, so make sure the date and time you want to move are correct, people tend to move at the beginning or end of the month so be aware of this and reserve the truck in advance. You are able to reserve a truck using a credit or debit card, also there maybe age restrictions so check with the rental companies when you do your comparisons.
However, you are always dependent upon the person (who has rented the truck before you) returning the truck on time…so check with the rental company the day before your rental to ensure the truck will be ready on time.
Before leaving the company with the truck, or before the employee leaves after dropping it off, check over the vehicle. Look for damage and scratches, check the locks and windscreen wipers and lights in case you are travelling at night, and most important, check the tires.
In this way, you know you are driving a safe and secure vehicle.
- What distance will you be traveling? The first is judging the distance of how many miles it will take to get your new location…and back again.
- Decide what size of truck you need. If you have a lot of possessions you may need to make more than one trip…so a larger truck may end up cheaper.

- Decide how long you need the truck for. It is best to rent for a little over the time you will need the truck, say another half or full day. This means you still have the truck in case you are delayed by weather conditions or other eventualities.
- You need insurance, check your home auto insurance before doing anything else as you may be covered for rentals vehicles, however some insurances will cover for rental cars but not vans. If this is the case you can buy insurance from the rental companies.
- Check for extra costs and details such as mileage limits, extra costs, adding on drivers, penalties for late return, fuel costs etc.
- Before signing the paperwork, take the truck for a test drive. Check the brakes carefully! Do not go for a test drive in a similar truck! Only test drive the truck you are going to rent.
